About X12

Established more than 40 years ago, X12 is a non-profit, ANSI-accredited, cross-industry standards development organization whose work is used by an overwhelming percentage of business-to-business transactions upholding America’s electronic information exchange.

X12, chartered by the American National Standards Institute, develops and maintains EDI standards and XML schemas which drive business processes globally. Led by diverse leadership groups, including a Board of Directors and Steering Committees, the Board is responsible for X12’s organizational and business affairs. The Steering Committees oversee operational activities related to the development and publication of EDI Standards and related work products for their specific areas of expertise. Makeup of the committees include technologists and business process experts in health care, insurance, transportation, finance, government, supply chain and other industries.

Members meet regularly to review industry changes and recommendations that have been submitted and determine whether updates to the EDI standards are indicated. This process facilitates consistent electronic interchange of business transactions as processes evolve, and affect operations such as order placement and processing, shipping, and receiving, invoicing, payment and cash application data. With more than 320 transaction standards available for use, X12 standards can be used to conduct nearly every facet of business-to-business operations.
